SUMMER
2001 ELECTRICAL CONSERVATION RESULTS

We
had a very successful summer conservation program this year.
We expected rolling blackouts and energy shortages throughout the state.
The combination of energy conservation, due to higher electricity prices,
and cool weather did much to circumvent the problem.
UCSB's
main campus performed very well. We
were able to reduce our electrical demand (the rate we use electricity) by 16.7%
on average throughout the summer. We
also reduced our total electrical usage (kilowatt-hours) by 13.8% compared to
last year.
I
want to congratulate and thank everyone who contributed to our success in
reducing energy use on campus this summer.
We will continue to improve reduce our power usage by auditing and
fine-tuning our buildings to achieve peak efficiency.
This
November, UCSB energy services will be installing a 180 kW microturbine
cogeneration system at the Old Gymnasium pool.
This system will use waste heat from the microturbines to heat the pool,
while providing electricity to Kerr hall. I
hope you will come by and visit the site after its completion (December 2001).
Thanks
again for your support!
