 UCSB Energy

DATE: June 3, 2002

TO: ALL UCSB STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF

FROM: Jim Dewey, Energy Manager, Energy Management Group; Physical Facilities

SUBJECT: Computers, Lights and Energy Savings Program

Personal computers and electronic office equipment represent a large and growing part of our electrical consumption at UCSB. The campus has approximately 12,400 computers. Each PC consumes about 60 watts and each monitor consumes another 60. The total electrical demand is about 1500 kW, or 14% of our campus peak demand. This is enough energy to power 1900 homes.

The harmful emissions produced by electrical generation to power these devices at UCSB are as follows:

CO2 = 8100 tons per year
SO2 = 20 tons per year
NOx = 27 tons per year

In order to save energy, and reduce negative environmental impact, we are requesting that you turn off desktop computers, printers, copiers and lights every night and every weekend. Please consult your local computer support staff to determine what computing equipment and peripherals can be turned off, and how automatic power saving features can be enabled.

We achieve double the cost savings when we reduce our usage during peak electrical load hours of the day (Noon to 6 p.m.). So in addition to determining what can be turned off at the end of the workday, please determine what can also be turned off during the day when it is not in use.

Your diligence has helped us to substantially reduce our electrical demand this summer. Our electricity rates will double in April, so any conservation efforts you achieve will be greatly appreciated, and will help Physical Facilities to deal with this ongoing crisis.

If you have any ideas for other energy savings, please contact Ken Hermann or myself at #893-2661 or e-mail (jim.dewey@pf.ucsb.edu).

Thank you for your support.

Jim Dewey
Campus Energy Manager

I would like to thank all campus constituents for your continuing help in conserving energy.
